Open a P7M file online, free, with nothing to install

A .p7m file is a digitally signed document: it holds the original file, usually a PDF or an Italian XML e-invoice, together with the signature. Pick it here and the tool opens it in your browser, lets you download the document and, if it is an e-invoice, shows it in readable form. The file stays on your device.

Or drop it here. Accepted: .p7m, .xml.p7m, .pdf.p7m and .xml e-invoices, up to 50 MB.

The file stays in your browser: the tool reads it on your device and sends it to no server, ours included.

What a P7M file is

A .p7m file is a CAdES envelope: it holds the original document, the digital signature and the signer's certificate. The name keeps the document's extension, so contract.pdf.p7m holds a PDF and IT01234567890_00001.xml.p7m an Italian XML e-invoice.

Reading it takes a program that removes the envelope. This tool does it in the browser: it reads the envelope, extracts the file and saves it under its own name, without .p7m. It also opens files saved as text (base64 or PEM), which some programs produce instead of binary.

Signed electronic invoices

The Italian e-invoice technical specifications (version 1.9.1) allow unsigned invoices and invoices signed in two formats: CAdES, with the .xml.p7m extension, or XAdES, with the signature inside the XML and the .xml extension. A single invoice file cannot exceed 5 MB.

The tool shows the main fields of the ordinary invoice (FPA12 to public administrations, FPR12 between businesses and individuals): supplier and customer, number and date, lines, VAT summary, payment and attachments. If the file holds several invoices (a batch) it shows them one below the other. Codes such as TD01, N2.2 or MP05 appear with the official schema description, in Italian.

More than one signature in the same file

AgID describes two ways to add signatures to a CAdES file: signing the already signed envelope again, the so-called nested or "matryoshka" signature (the file becomes .p7m.p7m), or adding signatures inside the same envelope (parallel signatures). The tool opens up to 5 nested envelopes and shows the signers of each.

What the tool does not do

It reads and shows what is in the file. Some things are left out, and we say so:

  • It does not verify the signature: integrity, expired or revoked certificate, qualified provider. The free services listed by AgID and the European Commission validator, linked below, do that.
  • It does not open detached signatures, a .p7m holding only the signature: the document is a separate file.
  • It does not show every invoice field: line discounts, order and transport data and less common fields stay in the XML, which you can download.
  • It does not display simplified invoices (FSM10), though you can still download them.
  • It accepts files up to 50 MB, so that phone browsers do not freeze.

Official sources

Tool built and maintained by LiftyUP using the official sources cited on this page. Rules and sources checked on 21 October 2026.

The tool reads the file and shows its content. It does not certify the validity of the signature or of the invoice: the official verification services and the Italian Exchange System (SdI) do that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a P7M file?

Choose the file on this page: the tool removes the signature envelope and lets you download the original document, for example the PDF or the invoice XML. Alternatively, AgID lists free programs that verify the signature and open the file, including GoSign, ArubaSign, DigitalSign Reader and Firma OK!.

Is opening a P7M here safe for my data?

The file never leaves your device: it is read in the browser and the page sends it to no server. You can test this by going offline after the page has loaded: the tool still works.

Does the tool verify the digital signature?

No. It shows who signed, who issued the certificate and the declared time as written in the file. It does not check that the signature is intact, that the certificate is valid and not revoked, or that its issuer is a qualified provider. For that, use the services listed by AgID or the European Commission online validator (DSS).

How do I turn an XML invoice into a PDF?

Open the XML or the .xml.p7m here, press "Print or save as PDF" and pick "Save as PDF" as the printer. The PDF is a copy to read or file: the electronic invoice remains the XML file.

What is the difference between .xml and .xml.p7m?

The content is the same; the signature changes. A .xml.p7m file is signed in CAdES format; a .xml file is either unsigned or carries an XAdES signature inside the XML. The Italian Revenue Agency specifications allow all three.

Why is my P7M damaged or not opening?

Usually the download broke off and the envelope is incomplete: download it again. If the .p7m holds only the signature (detached signature), the document is a separate file. P7M files saved as base64 or PEM text do open: the tool recognises them on its own.
