Frequently asked questions

What is VIES?

It's the European Commission's system that tells you whether a VAT number is registered for trade between EU countries. It queries each member state's databases.

How do I find out whether I'm registered in VIES?

Enter your VAT number here. If it shows as valid, you're registered. If you aren't and you need to be, you apply to your national tax authority (in Italy, the Agenzia delle Entrate).

Why don't I see the name and address?

You'll find them on the European Commission's official VIES site, linked under the result. They show up there when the member state shares them: Germany, for example, doesn't. The result of the check stays the same.

What is the consultation number?

It's a code the Commission issues if you also enter your own VAT number. It proves you made the check on that date.

Do you store the numbers I enter?

No. The result passes through our server and reaches you without being stored. For the day we only keep, in pseudonymised form (hashes), deleted the following day, the outcome of numbers that turned out not valid and a count of requests: it stops us from asking the European service the same question twice. We don't build archives and we don't use the data for anything else.
