What is ATECO 2025?

It is the Italian classification of economic activities maintained by ISTAT, aligned with the European NACE Rev. 2.1. It has been in force since 1 January 2025, and ISTAT, the Chambers of Commerce and the Revenue Agency have used it since 1 April 2025. It has 3,257 entries, from the section (one letter) down to the subcategory (six digits).

Why does my old code match several new codes?

With ATECO 2025 some activities were split or moved. ISTAT's correspondence table lists every linked code and, for subcategories, the activities they share. The right code is the one that describes the activity you actually carry out.

What does it mean when a code has no match?

That in the correspondence table the code is not linked to any code of the other version. This is the case for 46.89, Other specialised wholesale n.e.c.: it exists only in ATECO 2025.

Does the code have legal value?

No, just like the one from ISTAT's navigator. It is a reference you can use when you register or change a VAT number with the Business Register or the Italian Revenue Agency.

Where does the data come from?

From ISTAT's official files: the ATECO 2025 structure and explanatory notes, and the ATECO 2025 - ATECO 2022 correspondence table in its 2026 update, published in July 2026. They are released under a CC BY 4.0 licence and the text of codes and notes is the official one.
