Linking coefficients between bases

ISTAT periodically changes the index base year. To compare months expressed in different bases, you multiply by the linking coefficient of each change. The calculator applies all of them for you.

Frequently asked questions

Which index does the calculator use?

ISTAT's consumer price index for blue- and white-collar households (FOI) excluding tobacco, the one published in Italy's Official Journal for adjusting monetary values (art. 81 of Law 392/1978). It excludes tobacco from February 1992; for earlier months ISTAT uses the index including tobacco and a linking coefficient of 1.0009.

What changes with the new 2025 base?

From January 2026 the index has base 2025=100. To compare a 2026 month with an earlier one you multiply by the linking coefficient 1.214 (from base 2015). The calculator does it for you, as with the older links, and the steps show which ones it used.

How is the result rounded?

As ISTAT specifies: the coefficient is computed in a single step and rounded to 3 decimals, the percentage change to 1 decimal. The revalued amount is amount times coefficient, rounded to the cent: the calculator follows the same method as ISTAT's official Rivaluta calculator. Applying the rounded percentage change instead can differ by a few cents.

How is a rent adjusted?

For non-residential leases the increase cannot exceed 75% of the change in the FOI index (art. 32 of Law 392/1978), and many residential leases use the same measure. Which months to compare, and whether to apply 75% or 100%, is set by the lease: choose the months and the mode accordingly.

Does it work for maintenance payments?

Yes, if the court order or the agreement links the payment to ISTAT indices: choose full revaluation, the month the payment started or was last adjusted, and the month you want to reach. Amount and timing are set by the order.

Up to which month do the indices go?

ISTAT publishes each month's index around the middle of the following month. The latest month in the calculator is August 2026, with data updated on 10 October 2026: it is also shown above the result.

Do you store the amounts I enter?

No. The calculation runs in your browser on a copy of the ISTAT indices: amounts and dates never reach us or anyone else.
