Frequently asked questions

What is the Italian statutory interest rate in 2026?

1.60% a year from 1 January 2026, set by the Ministry of Economy and Finance decree of 10 December 2025 (Official Journal no. 289 of 13 December 2025). In 2025 it was 2%.

How is statutory interest calculated?

As simple interest: amount times rate times days, divided by 36,500. If the period spans several years, each year uses its own rate, and the calculator shows one row per year.

From which day does it run?

The calculator counts from the day after the due date up to and including the payment day. If in your case interest runs from another date, for example a formal demand for payment, enter that date as the due date.

Statutory interest or late payment interest?

Payments between businesses, or between a business and the public administration, for goods or services usually carry the late payment interest of Legislative Decree 231/2002, which is much higher. There is a separate calculator for that.

What happens after a court claim is filed?

Unless the parties agreed on a different rate, from the day the court claim is filed the late payment rate of Legislative Decree 231/2002 applies (art. 1284, fourth paragraph, of the Italian Civil Code). For that period use the late payment interest calculator.

Does it include interest on interest?

No. The calculator uses simple interest. Interest on overdue interest (art. 1283 of the Civil Code) is only due from a court claim or under an agreement made after the due date, and must be calculated separately.

Do you store the amounts I enter?

No. The calculation runs in your browser: amounts and dates never reach us or anyone else.
