When your Italian driving licence expires
A category B licence is valid for 10 years until age 50, then 5 until 70, 3 until 80 and 2 after that, and it expires on your birthday. Enter your date of birth and the date of issue or last renewal: we calculate the expiry and how long the next renewal will last.
This is an estimate based on the data entered and the rules of art. 126 of the Italian Highway Code. It does not apply to special licences, to licences with a validity shortened by the medical board, or to A and B licences renewed at the local medical board or by doctors specialised in diabetes. Your browser does the calculation: date of birth and date of issue are not sent anywhere.

How long the licence lasts
The validity depends on the category and on your age when the licence is issued or confirmed (art. 126 of the Italian Highway Code):
- AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE: 10 years; 5 years from age 50; 3 years from 70; 2 years from 80
- C1, C1E, C and CE: 5 years, but not beyond your 65th birthday; from age 65, 2 years, with the medical at the local medical board
- D1, D1E, D and DE: 5 years; 3 years from 70; 2 years from 80
- special AM, A and B licences: 5 years up to age 70, always at the local medical board
The licence expires on your birthday
AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE licences with ordinary validity expire on the day and month of your birthday. The rule applies to licences issued or renewed since 17 September 2012. At the first renewal after that date the validity is extended to the birthday after the ordinary expiry; from the following renewals it counts from the old expiry date.
The Ministry's example: someone whose birthday is 15 December and whose licence expires on 15 December 2023 renews it until 15 December 2033, whether the medical is before or after. If it is after, the days without a valid licence are not recovered.
The rule does not apply to C and D licences, to the CQC and to A and B licences renewed at the local medical board or by doctors specialised in diabetes.
How to renew
The renewal is a medical with an authorised doctor. This is how it works:
- a recent passport-size photo
- the PagoPA receipt for fee N004: 10.20 euros of fees and 16 euros of stamp duty (different fees in Sicily, Valle d'Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia)
- payment for the medical, which costs differently depending on where you have it
- after the medical the doctor gives you a receipt that lets you drive in Italy until the new licence arrives
- the new licence arrives at home by insured post: the postage is paid to the postman
If your licence has expired
Driving with an expired licence costs from 158 to 638 euros and the licence is withdrawn (art. 126, paragraph 11, of the Italian Highway Code). These amounts stay the same for the whole of 2026, because the update of fines is suspended.
To renew it you have the same medical. If it expired more than five years ago you also need a driving test. If your medical must take place at the local medical board and you cannot get an appointment before the expiry, you can ask the board for a temporary driving permit, valid until the renewal is complete.

Frequently asked questions
How often is an Italian B licence renewed?
Every 10 years until age 50, every 5 years until 70, every 3 years until 80 and then every 2 years. The same applies to AM, A1, A2, A, B1 and BE.
Does the licence expire on my birthday?
Yes, for AM, A and B licences issued or renewed since 17 September 2012: the expiry falls on the day and month of your birthday. It does not apply to C and D licences or to renewals at the local medical board.
How much does it cost to renew the licence?
The PagoPA payment for fee N004 is 26.20 euros: 10.20 of fees and 16 of stamp duty. On top of that come the medical, whose cost depends on where you have it, and the insured post for the new licence, paid to the postman.
What happens if I drive with an expired licence?
A fine from 158 to 638 euros and the licence is withdrawn (art. 126, paragraph 11, of the Italian Highway Code). After the renewal medical you can drive in Italy with the doctor's receipt while you wait for the new licence.
My licence has expired: what should I do?
Book a medical with an authorised doctor, with a passport photo and the PagoPA payment. For A and B licences already aligned to your birthday the new expiry counts from the old one, so renewing late does not extend the validity. If it is the first renewal after 17 September 2012, the validity starts on the day of the medical and runs to the following birthday. If it expired more than five years ago you also need a driving test.
If I renew at 50, does it last 10 or 5 years?
The Highway Code gives 5 years to a licence confirmed for someone over 50, and the Ministry indicates 10 years “until turning 50”. So what counts is your age when the licence is confirmed. If you turn 50 close to the expiry date, the doctor confirms the validity at the medical.
