When your vehicle inspection (revisione) is due in Italy
The first revisione is due 4 years after first registration, by the end of the same month; after that, every 2 years, by the month of the last inspection. Taxis, ambulances, buses and heavy vehicles have one every year. Pick the vehicle and the starting month: we tell you the last valid day.
This is an estimate based on the data entered: the records of the Motorizzazione prevail. Since 2018 trailers up to 3.5 t follow the same intervals as cars, but the Ministry set a transitional calendar for those already on the road: check the MIT website. Historic vehicles, imported used vehicles and re-registered vehicles may follow different rules. Your browser does the calculation: vehicle and dates are not sent anywhere.

How often the inspection is due
For cars, motorbikes, scooters, mopeds, category M1 motorhomes and trucks up to 3.5 tonnes the first inspection is due 4 years after first registration, by the end of the month the registration certificate was issued. The following ones are due every 2 years, by the month of the last inspection. This comes from art. 80 of the Italian Highway Code and art. 5 of Ministry of Transport decree no. 214 of 2017.
These vehicles need an inspection every year instead:
- taxis and hire cars with driver, including motorbikes used for this service
- ambulances
- buses and vehicles with more than 9 seats, including the driver's
- trucks and trailers over 3.5 tonnes
- atypical vehicles, such as light electric city cars
Up to which day you can do it
Up to the last day of the month it is due: if the inspection is due in May, you have until 31 May. You can also do it earlier, but the next due date will count from the month you did it.
After the test the sticker on the registration certificate shows the result: “regolare” (passed); “ripetere” if repairs are needed, with a new inspection within one month (meanwhile you can drive only after the repairs, with the garage's certificate); “sospeso” if the vehicle cannot be driven until a new inspection is passed.
Where to do it
At the Motorizzazione civile offices, for every vehicle, or at authorised garages. Garages inspect cars, trucks and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes, motorbikes and mopeds, taxis and hire cars with driver, ambulances and buses with up to 16 seats.
The Ministry warns that some Motorizzazione offices currently do not inspect cars up to 3.5 tonnes, motorbikes and mopeds: check with the office before paying.
New in 2026: Takata airbags
Since 17 July 2026 (Ministry decree no. 229 of 2 July 2026) inspectors check, using the chassis number, whether the vehicle has an open recall for Takata airbags.
Since 1 October 2026, if the recalled airbag has not been replaced yet, the result is “ripetere” and a new inspection is due within one month. Unlike the ordinary “ripetere”, until the replacement the vehicle cannot be driven, except to go home and to the manufacturer's network; after the replacement, with the manufacturer's certificate, it can be driven until the new inspection. If the manufacturer ordered the vehicle to stop immediately, the result is “ripetere, sospeso dalla circolazione”. The replacement is free, paid by the manufacturer.
Fines in 2026
Driving a vehicle that was not taken to its inspection costs from 173 to 694 euros, and the police note the suspension on the registration certificate until the inspection (art. 80, paragraph 14, of the Italian Highway Code). A suspended vehicle can only be driven to the inspection: otherwise the fine is from 1,998 to 7,993 euros, with the vehicle impounded for 90 days.
These amounts have applied since 2021: the two-yearly update of Highway Code fines is suspended until the end of 2026 (decree-law no. 200 of 2025, art. 9). A missed inspection can also be detected by automatic cameras.
Car tax (bollo): when it is due
The bollo is a regional tax with its own due dates, separate from the inspection. The general rule given by ACI: the renewal is paid by the end of the month after the previous bollo expired. If it expires in April, you pay by May.
You cannot choose the due date: it depends on the registration date, the type of vehicle and sometimes the Region's rules. For the due date and amount for your vehicle use the ACI calculator or your Region's tax portal.
